As many Nigerians anticipate the resumption of federal, state and private universities that had been closed for almost  three months from now. However, many proposed today, 21st June, 2020 as the resumption of the Airport authorities and uplift of interstate movement ban in Nigeria. But the federal government is in no hurry for school resumption as a measure against widespread of covid-19.

July 13th, 2020 has been pronounced by the secretary to the government of the federation Gidahyelda Mustapha, who revealed in the meeting held in Abuja on daily covid-19 briefing.  He there stated that schools will be reopened on the 13th of july to enable final year students take and complete their exams. Schools like University of Ilorin and some other varsities were in the middle of exam before the pronouncement of the General lockdown.

The Federal Government has listed the conditions for reopening of varsities. This was a measure against the continued uprising of realised cases on covid-19 in the country. As of today there are more than 19,000 discovered cases of covid-19. Therefore, the pronouncement of overall school resumption is not yet feasible as argued by the Presidential Task force (PTF) on Covid-19.

The force which was established to drive the implementation of the  pursual of the dangerous virus, Covid-19 said that the decision was part of the measures being taken to protect vulnerable Nigerians who may have some underlying infections. National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Sani Aliyu, said the decision to restrict gathering in churches and mosque was informed by the fact that most of those who go there are within vulnerable Nigerians who may have underlying illnesses.

Sadly, even if schools, particularly, varsities resume, the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) strike is still ongoing, which might hence restrain university students from resumption. The union in awaits of the Federal Government pronouncement of resumption will usurp their furious mindset on the Federal government 2009 compromised agreement with the union. Thus, varsities students are advised to keep to any available skill or knowledge steadfast against the imprecise date of resumption.
